Here are a couple of quick roughs that I had done to set up the scene from yesterday's "Spirit" post. I've always loved doing quick roughs 
Death Valley2
Onward into death valley from the scene we looked at yesterday. Deathly hot and dry but you get rich colors at dusk!
Death Valley!
While training for DreamWorks "The Prince of Egypt" we went on a painting trip to Death Valley California. I've since gone back many times; here's a quick sketch of the entrance to the Valley.
Local Trees!
Grove of trees down the street, painted this one tiny since it was on the fly. I'll try to track down the sketchbook to show you the context if you'd like.
Spirit!

These go pretty quick when I know where I want to go with them, maybe 10 minutes.
At the same time other roughs take a very long time as I paint and repaint until something usable emerges.
